The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has given an update on the number of cases the institution is investigating.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 14, the Office said in line with its determination to deal with corruption in the country, 45 cases are currently under investigation.
“The OSP will announce, in the next few weeks, its conclusion(s) and further action in the following cases: LaBianca Company Limited in respect of alleged – corruption and corruption-related offences in the context of evasion and valuation of duties on frozen and processed food products imported into Ghana between 2017-2021 involving LaBianca Company Limited and some high-ranking officials of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
Adjenim Boateng_Adjei in respect of alleged – corruption and corruption-related offences in the context of public procurement and abuse of office involving a former Chief Executive of the Public Procurement Authority.
Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka – in respect of corruption and corruption-related offences in the context of a public election, particularly corruption and intimidation in respect of a public election regarding the confirmation or otherwise of the nominee for the office of Chief Executive of the Juaben Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region” the statement disclosed.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor was established in 2018 by President Akufo-Addo, as part of measures by the government to deal with corruption in the country.
According to the Bill which outlines the objectives of the Special Prosecutor, it will investigate and prosecute all matters of corruption referred to it.
Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyeben, has consistently reiterated his resolve to work to achieve the objectives of the Office.
At his vetting, Mr. Agyebeng said, “I am not naïve to say that I am here to stop corruption, and indeed God Himself will not even acclaim to that, but I’m going to make corruption very costly to engage in. I will institute what I call, pressure for progress and institute systemic review of public sector institutions and the development of integrity.
Why can’t we have our own corruption perception index and publish them as to which institution is performing well and in that quest, If you are head and your sector is drawing the last straw, I’m sure you will sit up”, he stated.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have raised concerns about the slow pace at which the OSP deals with corruption in the country. According to the concerned citizens, the delays do not augur well for justice in the country.
Reacting to these concerns, Kissi Agyebeng said his outfit needs to gather relevant evidence in delivering on its mandate.
According to him, in as much as justice must be speedily expedited, there’s the need for his outfit to first exhaust all due processes in carrying out its mandate.
