It is all right so far for Afrobeats and its stakeholders with the arrival of the midpoint of 2022. June saw a flurry of significant releases, including Mzvee’s 10 Thirty LP, the sophomore studio album from ATown TSB, and the deluxe edition of Ruger’s Second Wave EP. The albums that we at DC Leakers selected for this month’s top five are only a handful of them.

In a 10-year career that has seen her go from girl-band lead singer to solo showstopper, MzVee has seen it all—first conquering the Afropop landscape with her dexterous fusion of dancehall, R&B and soul before retreating from the spotlight for a brief mid-career-hiatus.
The album that announced her comeback, 2020’s InVeecible, was a defiant addition to her oeuvre that reintroduced her to a public baying for her music. On her fifth album, 10 Thirty, released to celebrate turning 30, the Accra-born singer curates a polished musical offering in homage to herself, touching on themes of contentment, love and self-care with stirring contributions from a cross-continental cast.
Across 10 songs with influences from hip-hop, bongo flava, Afrobeats, highlife and amapiano, MzVee gives fascinating insight into her life, tapping Nigerian street pop star Bella Shmurda for a humorous plea to be left in her lane (“Abeg”) that segues into the Kofi Kinaata-featuring empowerment anthem “Winner”.
Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage, two of Afropop’s foremost female voices, join MzVee on “Dumebi” and “Coming Home”, respectively, adding their Midas touch to an album that’s primarily about finding peace within and finding joy in the midst of all the world’s mayhem.
Ruger is destined for hit-making after churning out hit records like “Bounce” and “Dior,” and he delivers once again. Ruger, Jonzing World’s music act, has finally released the deluxe edition of “The Second Wave,” his sophomore extended play.
Ruger has added three extra songs to the deluxe edition, making it a seven-track extended play. “WeWe,” “Girlfriend,” and “Warning” are the three new tracks added to the project.

Talented Ghanaian music producer ATown TSB has put out a new studio project dubbed ‘We Rage II,’ which is a sequel to the previous episode in this tape series.
Ever since Atown TSB’s inception into Ghana’s music limelight scene, he’s been a go-to guy or producer for dope Hip-Hop/Trap beats. His sound-tight and punchy bass kicks have become his signature.
‘We Rage II’ is a 5 track-listing body of work circumambient around the Hip-Hop/Trap genre. The tape opens with ‘Everyday’, followed by This Side, Lies, Ye Muna & Yesu Interlude. On the feature board, Atown TSB collaborated with $pacely, Kofi Mole, Kojo Trip, MC Ray, Bruno Kay, Strongman, Bosom P-Yung, and others.
Ghanaian rapper Kweku Smoke maintains the hedonistic and boisterous persona he first unleashed on 2020’s Snoop Forever across his sophomore solo project, the six-track EP Big Shmoke.
On “Nkrumah”, the Krakye Geng frontman compares himself to the legendary Ghanaian statesman Kwame Nkrumah, rapping and singing on the bouncy trap beat about being a messiah “come to save the game”. He goes ballistic on the drill-heavy “Woso”, delivering with a feistiness that compatriot Sarkodie, who has endorsed him on social media, would be proud of. And on “Chairman”, he goes toe-to-toe with asakaa frontman Yaw Tog and regular collaborator Bosom P-Yung to birth a new anthem for the genre.
